With the pandemic, it has made it hard for us to get together as we normally do each year.  We successfully had our first virtual hackathon over summer 2020 where we worked with volunteer interns on non-profit problem statements.  This allowed us to test out how working in an online-only environment would be.  For Opportunity Hack 2020, we have a new set of non-profit problem statements and one week to help them!

Dress for Success San Jose

The Barn at Tumbling T Ranch (formerly Girard Training Stables) was founded in 2013 when our director saw a need for quality, affordable lessons in the West Valley of Phoenix,  Arizona. We provide English and Western riding lessons to traditional and adaptive students.  GTS is a PATH certified facility and have participated in Special Olympic events. We provide various volunteer opportunities for both students, adults, and members of the community.  
      We believe that anybody should be able to ride horses. Finances are a lousy reason to tell someone that they can't learn to ride. We believe that being around horses is good for humans, physically, mentally, and emotionally. We don't believe in just showing up and riding. We believe in getting your hands dirty, feeling your horse's soft fur, and getting to know your horse before climbing on. We believe in community. Being outside is GOOD, especially for kids, but for grownups, too. We believe that it is okay for only one person to win a blue ribbon. We also believe that it is okay to be frustrated about this, as long as you take a deep breath and resolve to try again. We believe in experiential learning and working through a problem to try to solve it.

With a 24year track record, Sunday Friends empowers very low income families to break the generational cycle of poverty by fostering positive development in children and equipping parents to invest in their children's life success. With our unique Learn & Earn program, participants earn credits by participating in education programs, and then redeem those credits for basic necessities and other household items.

Founded in 2016, Daily Bowl rescues excess/blemished produce and rapidly redistribute to local nonprofits that serve the hungry members of our community. We have recovered and distributed close to 2 million pounds of food within Alameda County

Vidyodaya’s mission is to improve the quality of education received by underprivileged children in adivasi communities and to establish a culturally appropriate learning system with active participation of the community.

Vidyodaya

On May 31st, 2021 the United States of America will witness the centennial anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre. Racist white mobs descended upon the city’s Greenwood district—also known as Black Wall Street. Black residents were murdered in the streets, and the once thriving business district was completely destroyed. An estimated 300 lives were lost. 

In 2016, Greenwood Project was established to bridge the opportunity gap between Black and Latinx high school students and the financial services industry. The organization, named to honor what once was Black Wall Street, was cofounded by Executive Director Bevon Joseph and his wife, Elois. Greenwood’s primary focus is to expose students to the financial industry, as they believe that “kids can’t be what they can’t see.” They strive to show that attaining a highincome career, even in a lowdiversity field, is possible for Black and Latinx students. 

Greenwood Project’s mission is to introduce Black and Latinx students to the financial industry. With a focus on education, exposure, and immersion, Greenwood’s purpose is to bridge the opportunity gap between students from underserved communities and career pathways in finance. Their educational mission is achieved through a robust curriculum that teaches students’ the skills they need to succeed in a financial services internship. After rigorous training, students are immersed into an internship experience to get handson experience and build their resume. Greenwood Project’s goal is to capture students in high school, build their interest, teach them the skills to be successful, coordinate an internship experience for them, and help them translate that experience into a fulltime offer.

Greenwood Project

Thoorigai was born in 2011. Initially, the women created simple handbags with their newly acquired skills, slowly experimenting with various patterns and designs.

At present, with nine women in the team, Thoorigai has blossomed into a bagmaking venture that has produced and sold over 15,000 bags. With a name that means featherpen or quill in Tamil, Thoorigai is a result of the creativity and aspirations of rural women who have evolved about 100 different bag designs. Now they handcraft colorful bags and home furnishings using ecofriendly material. Over the years, they have honed their skills so well that they can make sustainable living out of this income.

The sale of these bags provides not only livelihood for the women and their families, more importantly being a part of Thoorigai has made them feel proud of their creativity. The women are much more confident, feel dignified in their families and able to afford better education to their children.

Janaagraha was founded in 2001 and is a nonprofit organisation that aims to transform the quality of life in Indian cities and towns. We work with citizens to catalyse active citizenship in neighbourhoods, and we work with governments to institute reforms to citysystems. Quality of life = quality of citizenship and quality of infrastructure and services.

Over the last 18 years, Janaagraha has been working extensively with Schools, Colleges, communities, municipal bodies, civil society groups and corporates, using the power of technology I Change My City to bring about two way communication between children, citizens and city governments. We are now leveraging our networks and relationships, providing our technology tools to strengthen the hands of city governments in speeding up the process of real time information dissemination, response management towards effective containment.

To make sports reachable and feasible to all children and in particular to children of the downtrodden. Victory Foundation's goal is to inspire a love of sports and physical activity that will be the foundation for healthy living, while simultaneously helping to build participants' positive relationships, inculcate positive behaviors, involving youths in social initiatives, improve their selfconfidence, independence and ability to deal with adversity.
